Or you could just save yourself the trouble and skip the wheat altogether. Modern Wheat Should be Avoided Even though wheat may have been healthy in the past, the wheat people are eating today is completely different.
In the case of wheat, this ancient diet staple was accidentally turned into a modern health nightmare. This article originally appeared on AuthorityNutrition. A team of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center examined the boards of the 50 largest drug companies by global sales excluding three companies that were not publicly traded. Sixteen of the 17 companies based in the United States had at least one.
Several had more than one. Six of the 41 were pharmaceutical company executives who served on hospital boards of directors or held other leadership posts. Fascism requires a fully integrated approach. But, there are a few exceptions to this. Here are the top 10 nutrition facts that everyone actually agrees on well, almost everyone…. Added Sugar is a Disaster We all know that added sugar is bad. It is definitely true that added sugar sucrose and high fructose corn syrup contains empty calories.
But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are other, much more serious dangers of sugar that are now reaching mainstream attention. Sugar from high fructose corn syrup, mainly due to the highly concentrated fructose content, is being implicated as a leading cause of obesity, cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Well, fructose is metabolized strictly by the liver, over time causing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, abdominal obesity and high cholesterol.
The problem with studying nutrition is people. Unlike studying one drug to see if it works, studying one nutrient is more difficult because clinical studies involve people and people NEED that nutrient to live and get that nutrient in many ways, not just in a pill. For example, how does a study show that Vitamin C does x There has to be someone in the study who doesn't get any Vit C and some who do so a valid comparison can be made. But how to make sure one Person doesn't ingest C?
So, any study on such necessities is damn near impossible. That is just one reason why the study of nutrition is so confusing and difficult and expensive. This thread is filled, again for real-life examples, with contradictory findings and advice. With diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and tooth decay on the rise, sugar consumption is a growing public health problem.
It is now more important than ever for people to remove excess sugar from their diets. How Much Sugar Is Recommended? In other words, the new guideline will suggest that people reduce their sugar consumption to below 5 percent of their total daily calories. What Does This Guideline Mean? It goes without saying that many Americans vastly exceed this recommendation on a daily basis, consuming dangerous amounts of the sweet stuff.
The problem is, free sugar is often added to foods by manufacturers and cooks, in addition to just naturally being present in foods such as fruit juices, honey, and syrups, leaving most people unaware of their daily sugar consumption.
What Should You Do? To put it simply, it is time to cut back. With that reality in mind, it is more important than ever to educate yourself about the amount of sugar in the foods you eat, and carefully consider the nutrition labels on the foods and beverages you purchase. Fortunately, the Food and Drug Administration is in the early stages of a process that would make these labels easier to read by pointing out the amounts of added sugars in a product. Nevertheless, we all must take responsibility for our sugar consumption.
Regardless of the approach, the important thing is to take the necessary steps to reduce your sugar intake. The FDA will take care of us. They couldn't sell it if the govt says it's bad.: In past years, research has shown that sitting for prolonged periods of time increases your risk of colorectal cancer, heart disease and kidney disorders as well as obesity, diabetes and poor mental health. Now, a study finds striking evidence that a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of disability in older adults.
Disability affects 56 million Americans and is characterized by limitations in the ability to do basic activities such as dressing, bathing and eating along with getting in and out of bed. Aside from reducing quality of life, the affliction raises the risk of hospitalization. In the research conducted at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, scientists studied 2, adults of the age of 60 and older. The participants wore accelerometers from to , which enabled their activity level to be monitored objectively.
Researchers found every additional hour a day the participants spent sitting raised their risk of disability by 50 percent. Surprisingly, sitting for long periods had this effect even in those who exercised regularly. In other words, prolonged sitting was found to be a risk factor for disability separate from the risk factor of a lack of exercise. This conclusion was reached through comparing those with similar health who participated in the same amount of moderate exercise.
While previous research suggested a link between prolonged sitting and disability, it was based on self-reports that could not be verified. Moreover, animal studies have indicated immobility is a separate risk factor for adverse health effects. The recent study was the first to obtain objective evidence that corroborates the results of the animal research, lead author Dorothy Dunlop notes.
It was published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. What Are the Implications? The main take-away from the findings is that a sedentary lifestyle is almost as great a risk factor for disability as the lack of moderate exercise. This means that in addition to engaging in the recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise three times each week, people need to reduce the time they spend sitting and be as active as possible. Dunlop tells Fox News that although the study was conducted on an older population, the effects on those who are younger would likely be similar.
She provides the following recommendations to reduce your sitting time: Stand rather than sit whenever possible, such as when talking on the phone or during work meetings. If your errands are short, walk instead of drive. When you run errands around town, park your car in the space most distant from your destination.
Take short walking breaks throughout the day. For example, when you get up to have some water, walk around the office or house. Always take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk around the pool table more.
I suggest placing only one cube of chalk on the table to help with this. If you play good pool from 7 until closing time on a 9 footer, I once figured that you'd walk about 3 miles, squat about 50 times, bend over 's of times.
Not bad exercise, really. Better than playing video games, for sure. What if it was as easy as squeezing half a lemon into a glass of water to start your day? Lemons have long been known for healing and nourishing properties.
Some of them are as follows: They are antiseptic and antiviral, and could play a role in fighting off infections, colds and other illnesses. Lemons are full of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and keeps skin smooth and wrinkle free.
For those with high blood pressure, edema or heart related issues, lemons are a natural diuretic and can help get rid of excess water and salt. Lemons contain flavonoid and limonoid compounds, both of which are anti carcinogenic and may help prevent the spread of cancer.
They are high in electrolytes like magnesium, calcium and potassium, and make a great rehydrating drink or a recovery drink after a workout. Lemon juice combined with the extra water may help neutralize and dissolve uric acid in the body.
Uric acid can cause problems such as joint pain, gout, kidney stones and inflammation. If you are convinced to give lemon water a try, please keep this in mind: Lemons used in restaurants have gotten a bad reputation lately as being contaminated with bacteria and fecal matter. Additionally, warm or room temperature water is best as cold water may be a shock to your digestive system first thing in the morning.
So tomorrow morning, consider reaching for a lemon and a glass of water instead of your usual cup of coffee. You may find yourself not missing the coffee at all! Hundreds of millions of pounds may have been wasted on a drug for flu that works no better than paracetamol, a landmark analysis has said.
Here are just 10 reasons why: They are faster than fast food. Making a green smoothie is easy and takes less time than ordering a burger at your local fast food joint. Everything in a green smoothie is good for you, from the sweet ripe fruit to the leafy greens and even the added water.
They are a whole meal in a cup and can be conveniently consumed on the go or in a car with a cup, lid and straw, and will not make a mess. Smoothies are both hydrating and satiating at the same time. They are high in protein, calcium, and many other nutrients essential for good health. They make a great, replenishing sports drink rich with electrolytes. Perfect as a pre-workout energy boost or post-workout recovery drink.
Smoothies are superior to juicing. They are an easy way to sneak more greens into your diet without really noticing. They digest very quickly and easily no bloating! The relatively low caloric intake in smoothies are great for weight loss efforts, while raising immunity against illness and disease. In a blender, add or more soft ripe bananas, peeled and broken into a few pieces. If the bananas are green or not spotted, they will be starchy and may cause digestion issues.
Ripe bananas digest well and they are so sweet that you will not need to add any sweetener. Bananas make a great smoothie base because they are sweet and creamy and take other flavors well. To this, add a few large handfuls of your favorite tender greens, like romaine lettuce, celery or baby spinach. Add about 2 oz of water and a few pieces of ice. Blend into a smoothie, and enjoy. For variations, you can mix in a smaller amount of a different fresh or frozen fruit or spice to flavor the banana base.
The simpler you keep your recipe, the more easily your body will be able to digest the smoothie. Another great smoothie base is fresh squeezed orange juice with pulp, or just plain oranges, peeled. This tastes particularly wonderful with any of the berries or tropical fruit.
Stay away from the tougher, starchy dark green leafy vegetables like kale and chard. Although on paper they are chock full of protein, calcium and other nutrients, their high levels of oxalic acid and other unfriendly compounds do not digest well in our stomachs. Additionally, not many enjoy their taste. You may also not want to add fats like nuts, seeds, nut butter or avocado as fats do not digest well with most sugary fruit and may cause you discomfort and gas if eaten together at the same time.
So this week, ripen a few bananas and buy a tub of baby spinach, it may just revolutionize your life and health! Posted by John Phillip http: Many people wrongly assume that because wild blueberries are so much smaller, their antioxidant content must be less than their larger, cultivated counterparts. On the contrary, wild blueberries can offer up to double the protection.
In the skin of all blueberries there is a highly concentrated supply of antioxidant phytochecmicals known as anthocyanins. After all, twice the blueberry skin, twice the antioxidant protection. Armed with this knowledge, researchers designed an experiment to see if wild blueberry consumption could positively influence the biomechanical properties of the aorta. Anthocyanins from Blueberries Improves Arterial Elasticity to Lower Heart Disease Risk Using a mouse model known to closely simulate metabolic syndrome in humans, the scientists fed the equivalent of two cups of wild blueberries per day for a period of eight weeks and found they were able to regulate and improve the balance between relaxing and constricting factors in the vascular wall, improving blood flow and blood pressure regulation of obese Zucker rats with metabolic syndrome.
That is right, you have 10 times as many microbes cohabitating with you as you have cells in your body. Scientists have identified over different strains of bacteria, and it is the balance of this internal environment that is so important for optimal health. Probiotics Are Our Best Line of Defense Since 90 percent of the immune system exists in the gut, having the correct balance of flora is also crucial for staving off illness. Without the adequate amount or the correct proportions of these individual species in your digestive system, your immunity can become compromised.
Additionally, imbalances of gut flora can lead to problems such as IBS, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, weight gain, susceptibility to infection and chronic disease. In essence, it is extremely important to your health to maintain the correct balance of intestinal gut flora.
Some important nutrients made by our gut flora include B vitamins, vitamin K, folate, and short-chain fatty acids such as butyric acid. Butyric acid is especially important as it helps to maintain a healthy intestinal lining and has been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer.
However, if the friendly bacteria are not abundant, our bodies cannot make or absorb these essential nutrients, which can lead to fatigue, neurological abnormalities and anemia.
So how can you maintain this balance when stress, lack of sleep, antibiotics and poor diet can all cause disturbances to our GI tract and its bacteria-friendly environment? Eating fermented foods, such as yogurt, kefir, kim chee and natto, to name a few, is a wonderful way to naturally ingest healthy flora, and can be a good preventative or maintenance measure. In this case taking a probiotic supplement is extremely important. The CFU, also known as colony-forming units, is a microbiological term that describes the density, or amount of, viable bacteria in a probiotic product.
In other words, the CFU tells you how rich in probiotics a supplement is, and how much will be available to your body. In order to repopulate the gut with the appropriate amount of bacteria and keep the correct ratio of species, it is crucial to take a high quality supplement with a CFU in the billions. Some of the most powerful probiotics backed by research can deliver over billion organisms per dose! Not all probiotics have to be this strong, but if you are taking a probiotic for a GI issue like IBS or constipation and not getting any benefit, make sure to look at the CFU number.
If it is below 5 billion, it might not pack enough of a punch. The other factor to consider is what organisms are actually present. Some probiotic supplements only contain one or two strains of bacteria, while others may promote a variety of strains. Different formulations may be more applicable to different conditions, and often times one must try various products before they find the one right for their body. I have some patients who report doing very well on a certain probiotic formula while others say the same formula was either ineffective or made them feel worse.
Because we are dealing with a dynamic ecosystem that varies greatly from person to person, results can vary. My best advice is to try a variety of products until you find the one that is right for you. This probiotic is one of the most well studied for preventing the diarrhea associated with antibiotic therapy.
Because it is a yeast and, therefore, unaffected by antibiotics, it can be taken at the same time. This makes dosing very easy and convenient and I recommend that anybody needing to take a course of antibiotics use this probiotic at the same time and for two weeks after the antibiotics are finished to support a healthy balance of flora in the colon. This delicate balance of bacteria in our body plays a significant role in our health and it is of critical importance to manage our bacterial ecosystem whether it is with food or supplements.
Emerging research is now linking these bacterial imbalances to cardiovascular disease, obesity, type II diabetes and neurological conditions so this is a story that goes way beyond the gut. Based on the current trend, experts fear that as many as one in three Americans over the age of 65 will suffer from some degree of dementia by the year Fortunately, there are some very simple lifestyle changes that we can adopt to change the current course of this explosion in new dementia cases.
Researchers Identified Exercise as the Most Important Lifestyle Factor to Lower Dementia Risk A research team from the University of Cardiff School of Medicine in the UK has identified five lifestyle behaviors that have been shown to reduce the risk of cognitive decline, and researchers say these healthy habits are more beneficial than medical treatments or preventative procedures.
Publishing in the journal, PLOS One, scientists were able to identify five healthy behaviors as being essential for the best chance of living a disease-free life. The researchers followed a cohort of 2, men aged from to in the United Kingdom. During this period, diabetes, vascular disease, cancer and death were recorded, along with an examination in to determine cognitive state.
After a detailed analysis of all available data the scientists identified the following five healthy behaviors as being essential for the best chance of living a disease-free life: According to a study led by Dr. Maintaining a low body weight: One study even found that metabolic factors resulting from excess body weight causes middle aged and older adults to experience a rapid decline in cognitive skills like thinking and memory. Following a healthy diet: Not only do unhealthy saturated fats from processed foods negatively impact brain health, sugar practically destroys it.
Conversely, those who consume a diet rich in spices such as curcumin and cinnamon, antioxidants and omega-3s tend to dramatically lower their risk for cognitive decline. Having a low alcohol intake: As far as reducing the risk for dementia, the scientists noted that regular moderate intensity exercise was the strongest factor.
The lead study author, Dr. Sources for this article include: This ancient crop native to Ethiopia will likely eventually be crowned king of the super grains, supplanting quinoa, the grain that currently holds the title. Why is the natural health community all abuzz over Teff? It Is a Nutrient Powerhouse This food is a good source of protein, magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium and iron. Its protein is complete, containing all nine essential amino acids, so it is a good choice for vegetarians.
The calcium content is impressive, having 17 times the amount of that found in whole wheat and barley, Teff is also naturally gluten-free and can be substituted for wheat flour in any recipe. Additionally, the grain has a type of starch with a low glycemic index, a factor that can promote healthy blood sugar levels, help sustain energy and aid in weight control. The grain has a nutty taste, similar to that of quinoa.
You can cook it to use as a side dish or sprinkle it over berries, salads or yogurt. Other uses include incorporating it into recipes for foods such as muffins, pancakes and banana bread along with soups or even meatloaf. For centuries in Ethiopia, this crop has been cultivated and ground to make injera, a flat bread with a slight hazelnut taste and earthy flavor. Teff was unnoticed by countries in the West until the demand for gluten-free products and healthier, traditional food became widespread.
As it has gained popularity, the Ethiopian government is actively promoting it, focusing on its main selling point, the fact that it contains no gluten.
A great increase in demand is anticipated. So if you were to look into a crystal ball and find out what you might be eating in , you just might see the smallest grain in the world, an emerging food superstar called teff.
You should try Chef Jeff Teff. In , the government in the U. Now, a new study in the British Medical Journal is showing the impact of this public health initiative. Researchers analyzed data from more than 31, people participating in the Health Survey for England between to During the study period, levels of salt intake among the population decreased by about 15 percent.
Over the same period, deaths from stroke decreased by 42 percent and deaths from coronary heart disease dropped by 40 percent. Rates of smoking and overall cholesterol levels in the population declined over the same period, while produce intake and body mass index both increased.
The researchers, from Queen Mary University of London, noted that the single largest factor contributing to the decline in deaths was decreased blood pressure among the population.
Some physicians noted that the U. Dow Chemical is seeking approval from the USDA for a new GM variety of corn and soybeans that can withstand multiple doses of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid 2,4-D , a chemical that makes up half the cocktail of the infamous Agent Orange AO.
The chemical corporation, now called Dow AgroSciences, is the manufacturer of AO, a warfare herbicide that destroyed forests and farmland in Vietnam, as well as wreaked havoc on the health of many people who came in contact with it. Harm inflicted by this herbicide on the land was permanent, and its horrific effects on health are manifested today in many Vietnamese people who are afflicted with a host of disorders, including blindness, deafness, deformities and mental illness.
Will 2,4-D-resistant crops help the herbicide-resistant weed problem? They will in the short run, but in the long run they will make the situation worse. The organization predicts that it is only a matter of time before herbicides that are even more noxious are needed to address the weed problem the new GM crops will generate. In other words, the resistant weed dilemma that requires stronger, more noxious herbicides will become a vicious circle with no end in sight.
Harmful Effects of 2,4-D Would you want crops grown with 2,4-D on your dinner table? FWW reports that a metabolite of this herbicide causes liver damage, skin sores and sometimes death in animals. Other harmful effects listed include hormone disruption along with the hindrance of normal growth, development and neural function.
In addition, tests show 2,4-D is contaminated with dioxins, chemicals that many consider the most toxic substances known to science. He characterizes the vicious cycle that has spurred Dow to make 2,4-D-resistant crops as the Frankenstinian effect. He also aptly compares this phenomenon to the bacterial resistance produced by antibiotics.
Here is his explanation. Herbicide resistance is akin to the antibiotic resistance that has been caused by incorrectly and even correctly prescribed antibiotics by doctors for infections.
Just as the use of antibiotics has produced superbugs that are resistant to drugs, so also the use of herbicides has produced weeds that are resistant to weed killers.
I predict that the development of new corn and soy crops that are resistant to 2,4-D will eventually create further herbicide resistance, which will necessitate the development of differently resistant crops. Unfortunately, the unanticipated health effects to humans as well as other creatures are inescapable and very detrimental. But these common reactions to stress only tend to make things worse by setting you up for nutritional deficiencies that can further affect your mental and physical wellbeing.
Stress hormones sap the body of important nutrients, such as B vitamins, vitamin C and the mineral magnesium. They also increase blood pressure and heart rate, make your blood clot easier, destabilize blood sugar levels and can cause body-wide inflammation, setting the stage for chronic disease.
A healthy diet is important to warding off the negative effects of stress. But if your normally-healthy eating habits are hitting the skids, nutritional supplements are important because they can help protect you by providing essential nutrients.
Here is a rundown of a few of the nutrients that can help buoy your health status when stress, illness or fatigue get you down. And be sure to check out the video at the end of the slide show that discusses how to avoid catching stress from other people.
Vitamin C Tames Cortisol Levels http: Research shows that people who get extra vitamin C do not show the expected mental and physical signs of stress when subjected to a stress challenge. People who got 1, mg of vitamin C had lower levels of cortisol and lower blood pressure than those who did not get it. They also said they felt less stressed. We recommend 1, mg a day of vitamin C in two or three divided doses. If stress makes you get sick, we recommend taking vitamin C along with these other nutrients: Continued in original article, link above Believe it or not, what you ate for breakfast that morning can influence how fast you hit the breaks.
Once again, science proves you are what you eat, as a new study provides yet more evidence that food influences behavior. What do spinach and eggs have in common? They both contain the amino acid tyrosine, which research published in Neuropsychologia found can enhance your reflexes. In the study conducted at Leiden University and the University of Amsterdam, scientists discovered that your tyrosine intake may help you stop more quickly and perhaps prevent an accident. Lead author Lorenza Colzato and her team designed a test to measure the ability to stop an activity in an instant.
They asked participants to look at a computer screen and press a button as soon as possible when a green arrow appeared. Additionally, the button they chose had to match the same direction the arrow was pointing. Before one test session the participants were given orange juice containing tyrosine, while before another test session they were given orange juice without it.
They reacted faster after they had consumed the tyrosine-laced juice. Can Tyrosine Improve Your Intellect? According to Colzato, the answer is yes. Tyrosine can not only help improve road safety but also boost your intellectual capacity, she says.
It is much preferable to using Ritalin and Modafinil, drugs students take to help them perform better in school, Colzato adds. These chemicals help prevent depression and apathy. So if you feel in need of a little mental boost, a nice spinach omelet may be just what the doctor ordered. While these strokes are much less common than ischemic strokes, the type caused by blood clots, they are more often fatal. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of all strokes are caused by an intracerebral hemorrhage, the rupture of a blood vessel within the brain.
The prognosis is grim, as the events are fatal to 34 percent within three months and 59 percent within one year. Research Shows Stroke Victims Were Deficient in Vitamin C In the study, which will be presented at a meeting of the American Academy of Neurology later this year, researchers compared the vitamin C blood levels of two groups of 65 participants.
The members of one group were healthy, and the members of the other group had suffered an intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke. In general, the findings showed those in the healthy group had normal levels of vitamin C, while those in the stroke group had depleted levels of the vitamin.
She recommends further research to explore specifically why vitamin C seems to be protective. She noted that although this was a small study, the findings appear on target with similar studies showing the effect of vitamin C on overall cardiovascular health.
This slowing of cholesterol buildup is an important mechanism for lowering your risk for a heart attack or stroke. The research illustrates the need to focus efforts on eating in a healthful manner, incorporating several servings of fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamin C into the diet every day. At least eight students at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken have contracted the contagious virus despite having received two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, according to the college.
Most people with high blood pressure take prescription medications to lower it. Some of these medications include diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers ARBs , beta blockers and alpha blockers. While generally effective, these medications have numerous side effects, such as erectile dysfunction, fatigue, leg cramps, insomnia, headache, dizziness and heartburn, to name just a few.
These unpleasant side effects have prompted many patients to look for more natural ways to reduce blood pressure. Fortunately, mild to moderate high blood pressure can often be decreased naturally by following a healthy diet like the Mediterranean diet , exercising regularly, and taking specialized heart-friendly nutrients like CoQ10 and magnesium.
Magnesium, in particular, seems to be an unsung hero when it comes to heart health and lowering blood pressure naturally. So, research shows people with high blood pressure could greatly benefit from magnesium supplementation, and many people are deficient in this mineral without even knowing it.
Many factors can deplete magnesium levels in the body: Chronic stress causes your body to have increased levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. If your bloodstream is flooded with these hormones, it causes magnesium to be released from your cells and removed from the body via urine. Poor diet is also a culprit. In the early s, people were regularly consuming mg of magnesium through their diets. Now, that value is closer to mg a day, which is not enough.
Taking too much calcium can cause your kidneys to excrete magnesium. Ideally, calcium and magnesium should be taken in a 2: For instance, if you take 1, mg of calcium, you should take mg of magnesium. Foods rich in magnesium include whole grains, seafood, leafy green vegetables, tofu, kelp, brown rice, figs, bananas, apricots, seeds and nuts.
If supplementing with magnesium, take up to mg a day. Remember, as mentioned earlier, you should take twice as much calcium as magnesium.
Effect of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure: Eur J Clin Nutr. New research indicates that tree nuts may reduce risk for metabolic syndrome. It is estimated that 34 percent of the U. As the incidence MetS of continues to skyrocket in many unsuspecting individuals, a wealth of scientific evidence now shows that eating a variety of tree nuts is not only beneficial to our health, but also helps lower obesity prevalence in the adult population and aids weight management as part of a natural food diet.
How Tree Nuts Improve Reduce Metabolic Syndrome Abnormalities and Improve Weight Loss Efforts A research team from Loma Linda University in California studied Seventh-day Adventist adults to establish an association between tree nuts almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts , metabolic syndrome and obesity in a population with a wide range of nut intake ranging from never to daily.
Publishing the results of their work in the journal PLOS ONE, the scientists were able to determine that the amount of tree nuts consumed daily correlated directly to the prevalence of obesity in the adult participants.
The researchers used a validated food frequency questionnaire to determine the daily intake of tree nuts and peanuts, both together and separately. The participants were then rated as to high tree nut consumption, averaging 16 grams per day, to low consumption with an average intake of 5 grams per day.
Another benefit found by the researchers is lowered body weight. Although nuts are relatively high in calories, they squelch appetite by providing a solid source on non-animal protein and have little to no impact on blood glucose levels. Additionally, there is some evidence to suggest that the monounsaturated fats are conserved by the body for cellular metabolism and are not readily burned as a source of fuel by the body. Turns out, certain foods can do just that.
Here are 12 foods that offer up a plethora of brain-boosting benefits. In addition to being concentrated in the leaves of celery, luteolin can be found in rosemary, oregano and chamomile tea.
Scientists analyzed data compiled from the questionnaires of 60, middle-aged women regarding their dietary practices, including detailed information on their diet drink consumption. Approximately nine years later, they checked on the health of the women to ascertain if a correlation existed between the number of diet drinks they consumed and their risk of cardiovascular problems.
Women who drank two or more diet beverages per day had an 8. This compares to a 6. Lead author Ankur Vyas characterized the findings as a fairly low risk. Joseph Mercola reports that people have been conned into thinking diet sodas are a more healthful alternative to sugary drinks for decades. While the link between diet drink consumption and cardiovascular disease has not yet been proven, other research associates the artificial sweeteners and colorants they contain with serious health issues.
The two reasons people drink these beverages are that they believe the drinks help them to avoid gaining weight and enable them to escape the development of diabetes and other maladies linked to drinking sugary beverages.
Yet studies show these commonly held beliefs are myths. A John Hopkins study indicates overweight people who consume diet drinks actually take in more calories from food compared to overweight people who consume sugary drinks. Furthermore, Purdue research found people who consume diet sodas have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. These studies show that diet beverages have no benefit whatsoever.
Studies are constantly showing that black and green tea have an array of health benefits. Research also indicates coffee is healthful, but be careful to drink it in moderation and not overdo because of its high caffeine content. You can sweeten a cup of tea or coffee with a little raw honey.
Another healthful beverage option is a glass of water with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice. Note that this page is updated regularly.
